Nowadays, we are so much dependent on technology in our daily lives, it's no wonder we travel overseas with several electronic gadgets. However, depending on the airline you choose and the place you are visiting, rules and limitations for taking gadgets onboard may differ.

Whether you are a first-time flier or a seasoned traveler, it is important to understand the inflight rules before flight ticket booking. You must be aware of the number of gadgets you can carry on a flight, and how to use them while flying is critical to ensure a pleasant and hassle-free journey.

Being the most trusted travel agency, WMTC strives to make your journey seamless. Therefore, we have brought you the guidelines for carrying electronics on a plane.

Guidelines for Carrying Electronics on a Plane

The Security Administration has no fixed quantity limitations for bringing electronic devices for personal use on a plane. However, for international flights such as from New York to Delhi, it is necessary to know the customs regulations of your destination country.

If you are carrying so many new laptops, it may seem you are importing them; you may have to pay tax for them. Also, for foreign travel, bring a plug adaptor compatible with the outlets in your destination country. Furthermore, large lithium-ion batteries, as well as extra non-spill wet (gel cell, absorbed electrolyte) batteries, are restricted to two per person. Each lithium-ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100Wh or a lithium content of 2 grams for lithium metal batteries.

Whether you are a first-time flyer or a regular one at WMTC, we strongly recommend you go through the complete rules and restrictions regarding the usage of electronic gadgets at the time of flight booking. Meanwhile, here are the Inflight Rules for Using Electronic Devices.

Getting Through Security

You must avoid putting your electronics deep down in your carry-on luggage. At the security checkpoint, gadgets that are larger than a smartphone should be examined separately. It is suggested to use a security administration-certified bag with a dedicated section for gadgets to prevent this problem. This bag is conveniently accessible during screening, ensuring gadgets are thoroughly examined.

Flying with Medical Electronics

Security Administration personnel are instructed to treat people using personal medical electronic devices like pacemakers, neuro-stimulators, and insulin pumps with utmost care and respect. Still, it is crucial to note that these gadgets may affect the screening process. Therefore, it is best to download a notification card that you can show to a security agent to avoid discussing your medical device in public.

It is also advised to notify the agent about your medical device before the screening starts and be ready to go through alternate screening procedures such as a millimeter wave scanner or a pat-down rather than passing through a metal detector. If you use an insulin pump, the security guard personnel may ask you to self-pat down the pump, but they should not ask you to disconnect from it.

While on the Plane

After successfully passing through the security screening checkpoint, you are now ready to board the flight in which you have your booking. Airlines may have their distinct rules for what you can and cannot take into the cabin, but in general, anything that passes through the security screening will be permitted. However, it doesn’t mean to overpack and believe that you will be able to pass through the gate with all of your belongings. You may be required to gate-check some of your baggage if you are carrying too many items or if they exceed the carry-on size restrictions imposed by your airline.

You can use your portable gadgets soon after boarding the flight and until the crew prepares the aircraft for takeoff. Most airlines request to keep laptops beneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Nonetheless, many airlines allow you to bring small electronic devices on board as long as they are in airplane mode and are not linked to airplane power during takeoff and landing.

Packing Your Electronic Devices

The security administration recommends keeping your personal gadgets in your carry-on luggage. It not only allows you quick access but also makes it more difficult for potential criminals to steal them. If you must carry your devices in checked baggage, it is best to use a security administration-approved lock that allows officers to scan your luggage while preventing illegitimate access.

For a safe and stress-free journey, it is always good to learn and adhere to the rules imposed by airlines for carrying electronic devices. You can also ask the travel experts at WMTC.
